It’s officially 2023!! I love January. I really do. It’s always full of so much possibilities. It’s so ripe with anticipation and excitement for what the year will bring.
I think I’ve said before on here that I don’t believe in New Year’s Resolutions, but I do enjoy taking time to stop and reflect back over the past year and let myself bask in gratitude and awe at all that has happened. If you try to look at your life and find areas of weakness and resolve to fix them…well, it’s as useless as that chinchilla at the pet store who runs really fast in his wheel, but gets nowhere.
I have high hopes for 2023. I’m looking forward to the release of Somewhat Alive in a few weeks. I hope it’s well received and actually gets some reviews. We’ll see.
I also believe Fiercest Chicken will be released sometime this year, possibly as soon as April, but more realistically, probably June. We’ll see.
I’m hoping to finish the first draft of both Hawthorne Heights and Somewhat Unreal and maybe even revisit Salt in the Shallows. I think that one may have more potential than I’ve been giving it. We’ll see.
On a more personal front, I don’t necessarily have any specific hopes, but just a general aura of hopefulness. 2022 was a year of dreams coming true, both dreams I’ve had since childhood and also dreams that are so crazy I would never have dared to dream it in the first place. So really, 2023 could bring all sorts of good things into our lives.
Today, we went to the park and played tennis for the first time since I caught the plague back in early December. And while I was a little rusty, it felt so good to be back on the court and playing as hard as I could, with the warmth of the sun on my shoulders.
I’ve been interested in the Dark Ages lately, or the Early Middle Ages, as they’re calling it now. I don’t know…there’s just something appealing about Dark Ages, even if it wasn’t really very dark. Early Middle Ages just doesn’t hit the same. I found a copy of Beowulf at the library, the one translated by Tolkien, and I’m really looking forward to giving it a try. I’ve heard it’s quite good.
Also, my mural wall is in desperate need of repainting. We still have our Halloween mural up. I meant to repaint it before Christmas, but Christmas is a lot more challenging if you stay sick throughout most of December. I’ll probably just go with a nice winter theme, rather than full on Christmas. Maybe channel my inner Bob Ross and paint some happy little trees or something.
But I just now thought of this—we could have a Dark Ages themed mural! See, writing often brings clarity like that. That’s why I do it.
